Over decades of experience as a professional coach, coach trainer, conflict resolution specialist, and leader, I have found that there is one important thing that makes the biggest difference in success and fulfillment for both individuals and teams. It’s an ever-present big opportunity that’s waiting to be seized. What is that one critical factor that makes all the difference? The bottom line: It all comes down to how people are showing up. What SELF are they bringing to the situation, and to the world?
We all show up differently in different situations, in different roles, and under different circumstances. I call this the Self-Continuum (TM). Our smallest self tends to experience interference from high anxiety and high conflict, while our biggest, best self experiences a smoother path for high functioning.
When we…
- deepen our understanding of the different aspects of ourselves,
- discover what brings out our best self,
- identify what triggers our smallest self,
- and then learn how to manage those things,
… then we can intentionally choose the best-fit self for the situation, and our results and satisfaction expand exponentially.
Developing this awareness, expanding capacity for self-management, and cultivating commitment to intentional choice is at the core of most of my work. It opens up big opportunities for exciting transformational change for individuals, teams, and organizations.
